Basic Computer Hardware Components

Computer hardware describes the internal components of a computer, including the main processing unit (CPU), main memory chip, hard drive, input and output devices, motherboard and computer software. A typical computer consists of several hardware components. The computer hardware is often soldered to the motherboard and plugs into the system board through an analog or serial cable. Some systems use an external ATX cable to connect the hardware to the system board.

Modern PCs can include many different kinds of computer hardware and depending on the manufacturer and model of the computer system, the components can vary. The computer hardware of a PC includes four primary categories: input and output devices, microprocessor, memory and power. Each component is assigned a specific function by the manufacturer of the computer system. The parts of the computer hardware to perform the same basic functions, but are executed in different ways in modern PC’s.

Computer input devices refer to the pieces of hardware that a user interacts with to control a PC. There are a variety of computer input devices, including keyboard, pointing devices, trackball and mouse, gamepad and joystick. Other input devices include printers, scanners, USB drives and memory stick. Output devices provide information to the PC and other computers to operate the PC.

Central processing unit (CPU) is the most complex and most critical part of the CPU. The CPU performs single instruction and multiple instructions per clock cycle. The role of the CPU is to divide processing time into tiny chunks or cycles and use those chunks of cycles to execute programs and execute computer operations. The central processing unit (CPU) performs allocating work tasks to the various input and output devices. The most important components of the CPU are the microprocessor, caches, register files and hardware random access memory (RAM).

The main structure of a PC is a mother board. Motherboards provide the connection between the CPU and all other hardware. The motherboard contains input and output devices such as a keyboard, mouse and trackball. It also contains a random access memory (RAM) for the CPU to store data and instructions. Some motherboards use a separate video card and sound card instead of the typical CPU and RAM combination.

To connect the CPU to the rest of the hardware, the motherboard creates a bridge called the motherboard bus. This is the only part of the computer that actually connects the CPU to external peripherals such as printers and scanners. The CPU can also use a secondary internal bus called the system bus, which is a peripheral device built inside the mother board itself.

There are many different types of hardware that can be used on a PC. These hardware components add functionality to the computer and are called modules. There are many different modules that can be installed on a PC. These include the standard hardware components such as the CPU, hard disk, graphics card and printer.

Another piece of hardware that is found on a PC is a central processing unit or CPU. Other commonly known as central processing units, these are single-core processors that can only execute one instruction at a time. Modern PC’s also has higher frequency processors than their predecessors. Modern motherboards provide additional circuit boards that can support many different hardware components in a computer system.

One of the most important pieces of modern computer hardware is the hard drive. This is where most data is stored. A hard drive can hold information that is stored on the user’s computer or on an external storage device. External storage devices such as external hard drives are referred to as either storage devices or cd-roms. A CD-ROM is a read/write software program which can be inserted into a CD or DVD drive.

Another important piece of modern PC hardware is the random access memory or RAM. This is the component that performs much of the random access task which the CPU performs. Modern PC’s generally came with a standard configuration of RAM, so it is not necessary to purchase extra RAM just to add additional software applications. RAM is generally purchased in multiples of 32MB, so that each application has access to a portion of the RAM memory.

One of the most important pieces of computer hardware is the operating system software. The operating system software controls many different hardware functions, but it is the responsibility of the operating system software to control and maintain all the hardware that is part of a computer system. Many different components make up a typical operating system software package. These components include applications, server services, network services, security systems, and many different hardware components.
