Modern PC’s generally came with a standard configuration of RAM, so it is not necessary to purchase extra RAM just to add additional software applications. RAM is generally purchased in multiples of 32MB, so that each application has access to a portion of the RAM memory.

The operating system software controls many different hardware functions, but it is the responsibility of the operating system software to control and maintain all the hardware that is part of a computer system. Many different components make up a typical operating system software package. These components include applications, server services, network services, security systems, and many different hardware components.
